Capacity constraints limit Irish Rail expansion in south east

Concerns over future of Irish Rail with fears that parts of network may close

Irish Rail says any expansion of rail services in the South East would need to go through public consultation.

The comments follow calls from a Labour Councillors Sean O’hArgain and Tomás Breathnach for more frequent, possibly hourly, services between Carlow, Kilkenny and Waterford to allow earlier arrivals for work and college.

Iarnród Eireann spokesperson Jane Cregan says any change would need to be approved by the National Transport Authority: “Our timetable that we create is in conjunction with the NTA, who are a funding authority.”

“As you’re aware, we’re extremely busy and we are operating at capacity at the moment, so finding train sets to provide additional services could be a challenge for us.”
