Carlow county council is using every method it can to clamp down on illegal dumping and littering.
91 littering and dumping offences were detected since last October using its CCTV system and fines started to be issued in December.
Cameras were initially installed at six locations across Carlow Town and County.
Carlow Council CEO Coilin O’Reilly says littering and illegal dumping is a curse: “Ilegal dumping is an absolute scourge.”
“I’ll to be honest, my whole career in local government, I really don’t understand how people feel it’s okay just to throw paper on the street or, you know, whatever it is, whether it’s dog fouling or whether it’s sticking a plastic bag down the side of a tree or hanging dog poo over a tree, I don’t understand it at all.”
“So any time we get the opportunity to try and change that behavior, it’s really important.”
