A Carlow councillor is calling on the local authority to invest in a property-marking device to help tackle theft in the area.
The device, which is already in use in every county except Carlow and Kilkenny, engraves an owner’s unique ID onto valuable equipment, making stolen items easier to trace and harder to sell.
Cllr John Pender told KCLR News that the marker would be a huge asset in reducing crime.
“It’s a relatively inexpensive piece of equipment, but what the plan would be, that the Gardai would have control of this, that there would have different locations throughout County Carlow and have a day where people could bring their equipment or whatever to have it marked.” he said.
“Then if it was ever stolen and located in another county, or in another location, that their name and or the mark would be on it, wow this would also act as a deterrent to would be theives.” he added.
