A Carlow councillor has called for the governemnt to reintroduce proper supports to renters.
It comes as People Before Profit’s Adrienne Wallace says the housing crisis is the worst she has ever seen, with emergency accommodation full for the past three months.
She is praising the local authority for the work they do with little resources. “I’m genuinely worried that we’re getting to a stage where it’s going to be a case that people are either sleeping in their cars or on the streets of Carlow.”
“Now, this crisis has been escalating and Carlow County Council have been trying to source alternative emergency accommodation. It’s been very slow moving and obviously we haven’t progressed to that stage yet ,but I think ultimately the council, in fairness to them, when they’re given the resources, they will use them.”
Meanwhile a spokeperson for Carlow local authority told KCLR Carlow County Council is managing nearly 30 verified eviction notices involving tenants in HAP and RAS properties.
The council says it is working closely with affected families to prevent homelessness by securing alternative housing and rental options.
This year, €2.5 million has been allocated for housing supports, including acquisitions and special needs housing, with €1 million to be delivered through approved housing bodies.
