The sight of an elderly couple wearing heavy coats while sat in their house has raised fears for one Carlow County Councillor about those who may be choosing between a grocery shop and turning on their heat.
Sinn Féin’s Jim Deane told the Council’s April meeting that he was assisting the couple with a grant application and initially thought that there must have been a problem with the property’s heating system.
Cllr Deane told KCLR News he soon learned that this wasn’t the case noting; “When I, kindof, did a bit of research around I noticed that the heating system was working perfectly when I did enquire but because of the cost of the fuel the people said they were unable to turn on the heating and this was before the fuel increase, or before any issues, and if this is the form now it’s going to be fairly serious going forward”.
