Carlow county councillors will decide today whether to lower the existing rate of property tax.
Local authorities have the power to increase or decrease the rate by as much as 15 percent.
Fianna Fail councillor Finta Phelan is among those advocating a decrease in the rate but Cathaoirleach Fergal Browne has warned that a reduction in the property tax could result in up to 600 thousand euro worth of cuts to existing services.
A discussion on the rate of tax is to take place at a special meeting at the County Council Offices at 3pm today.
