A new motion to give official recognition to Irish sign language has been passed by Carlow local authority.
Council members voted unanimously in favour of the motion in an effort to improve the lives and well-being of those who are deaf or hard of hearing.
As it stands, Irish sign language is not officially recognised in this country.
Fianna Fail Cllr Jennifer Murnane O’Connor says she put forward the motion after a local deaf man made her aware of the issue.
