Farmers are warning of ongoing pressure on egg supplies without urgent action from retailers.
A two cent per egg increase is being sought to cover rising costs, as shoppers already report empty shelves.
Producers say supply is tightening further, with eggs from the North now being diverted to the UK.
Local farmer John Gittens says action is needed now to avoid future shortages. “there is big pressure on the industry currently.”
“I know from my own perspective, we were looking recently about building a shed and just tomorrow I think there’s an 8% increase coming in in concrete. So stuff like building a shed would be way more expensive going forward.”
“So there is huge investment required really.”
