The government needs to reconnect with the public and reflect on the referendum defeats at the weekend according to one of its own MEPs.
In the Carlow Kilkenny constituency alone 43% of the 117,528 electorate cast their votes last Thursday – recording a 70.7% No for the Family referendum and 72.2% for the one on Care.
Fine Gael’s Colm Markey says the coalition must take collective responsibility, claiming it was not the fault of one individual.
He says the government needs re-evaluate ahead of the local and European election in the coming months, noting “We have to stand back and reflect on this and perhaps some other issues as well, there’s no doubt, we need to be, always have to stay in touch with the public and you always have to be aware and on the ground and I think that’s something that the longer you’re in Government the more you have to focus around and I think we certainly have to reevaluate our situation and I suppose get out there on the ground and start talking to people”.
