Child benefit should never be linked to school attendance according to local TD

Kathleen Funchion has criticised proposals to link child welfare payments to truancy.

The proposals are contained in the programme for government between Fine Gael and Independent TDs.

However, local deputy Kathleen Funchion says it’s much too simplistic to link the paying of child welfare benefits to school attendance.

Sinn Féin’s spokesperson on Child and Youth Affairs told KCLR Live this morning, that it’s not fair on families as it doesn’t take into account some of the reasons children might be leaving school.
