The Labour Councillor for Bagenalstown said that social media companies need to do more to stop the promotion of videos that glorify reckless and dangerous driving.
This comes after the Oireachtas Media Committee invited TikTok to appear before it in September, saying it must explain how it tackles content which glorifies crimes.
Chair of the committee Labour TD Alan Kelly extended the invitation following growing concerns about content being shared online showing young people driving recklessly to evade Gardaí.
These concerns have grown in the aftermath of Sunday’s fatal collision on the M9.
Cllr Quinn told KCLR News that it’s totally wrong that content like this is allowed to be posted to social media in the first place.
“I think something has to be done to curtail what is going up on it, because it is totally wrong. It’s sending out the wrong message” .
“Gardaí are doing everything they can, it’s time to take some control over these companies”.
“It’s these organisations that are allowing it to happen… People’s lives are at stake”.
The Councillor added that young people are being influenced by this problematic content online:
“There’s different times out there now and having this on your phone is a big thing”.
“Something certainly has to be done”.
