While welcoming the €2.1 million in Government funding which will make the N76 Callan Bypass safer, a local Councillor remains committed to campaigning for the construction of a roundabout on the route.
Joe Lyons told KCLR News that speeding on route around the town has been a persistent problem for several years.
He believes that a roundabout, in addition to narrowing the carriageway and widening footpaths on the bypass, would be in the best interests of the community.
Cllr Lyons says; “I would still put and I would love to see a roundabout there, I think a roundabout would slow everything down, but TII won’t allow it but hopefully this will solve, or come to some way solving the problems of the speed on the bypass”.
He adds; “There are 16 of them on the Ring Road in Kilkenny and there’s not one in Callan simply because of the Bypass and how they can’t put it on at the Westcourt Junction there, I can’t understand it, but TII will not allocate or will not look at it”.
