The Dáil will vote next week on introducing a new lower speed limit in housing estates.
The proposal from Sinn Fein would lower the speed limit to 20 kilometres an hour in residential areas.
It would be up to local authorities to decide exactly what roads would be covered by the new limit.
Kilkenny woman Roseann Brennan has been campaigning for lower speed limits in housing estates since her six-year-old son Jake, was killed after being knocked down near his home in Lintown last June.
She held a meeting with Transport meeting Paschal Donoghue before Christmas.
The government will decide on Tuesday whether it will allow the bill to pass.
