Members of the Defence Forces in Kilkenny are busy preparing over 100 Christmas Dinners for those in need.
It’s a real community effort as, although, army personnel prepare the meals at James Stephens Barracks, they’ll be distributed across Kilkenny City and environs by volunteers from the a number of GAA Clubs and the Kilkenny Lions Club.
Joe Malone is coordinating the volunteers…
“We’ll be getting the dinners from the chef, Sergeant John Sheridan and I want to thank him and the staff and also Lieutenant Colonel Rob Kearney, the OC of the Third Infantry Battalion at James Stevens Bank for Kilkenny.”
“I am doing volunteer coordination with the social services and we’re delivering the meals to over a hundred people over the two days, today and tomorrow but mostly in the city and some in other parishes outside as well.”
“All volunteers, young people from James Stevens Hurling Club, and from O’Loughlin Gaels and Clara as well. The youngsters love doing it and we love going around to the houses and chatting to people because they always say to them that we could be the only ones that they’d see over the next two or three days. So it’s important to drop there. It’s not just about to meal, they like to chat as well. And that’s what it’s all about.”
