The first capital project to be delivered in Carlow under the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund was officially launched by Housing Minister James Browne on the grounds of Carlow Collegeyesterday afternoon.
The €2.9 million Rail Link Project will create a new pedestrian and cycle route connecting Carlow Train Station to the town centre.
Speaking to KCLR News, Minister Browne said projects like the Rail Link will enhance town centres across the country. “We’re going to see an awful lot more of these types of projects, getting people out of their cars, but connecting our communities.”
“I think, one thing I think really represents Irish people is that word community and I think getting people out of their cars, creating these kind of walkways where people can move around, creating these third spaces, I think it’s really what it’s all about, helping our communities to thrive.”
“Along with major investment in housing itself, we must also provide the infrastructure that aligns with Government’s commitment to creating vibrant, liveable town centres, where walking and cycling are accessible and attractive options.”
“The Rail Link through Carlow College Project, with over €2.9 million in URDF support, is an excellent example of a local authority seeking to achieve this goal.”
“I would like to commend Carlow County Council on their work to date, and look forward to returning to see the outcome of this exceptional project once completed.”
“This project will provide a much-needed direct pedestrian link between Carlow Railway Station and Carlow town centre,” said Carlow Chief Executive, Coilín O’Reilly.
“It aims to significantly improve accessibility for pedestrians travelling between the train station, St Leo’s College, Carlow College and the town centre, as well as for all adjoining properties.
“Promoting permeability, pedestrian access and encouraging a more active lifestyle, this is a big step for the town.”
