Election candidates in the spotlight for possible breach of Data protection laws

Local politicians might be hearing from the Data commissioners office shortly if they are found to have breached the data protection act.

Assistant commissioner Tony Delaney says they have had a number of complaints already from people who were contacted by phone, text or email by candidates looking for a vote in the elections.

If any complaints are upheld those responsible will be warned about their actions but there is potential for prosecution too.

Tony Delaney told Sue Nunn earlier that they were all warned about it ahead of polling day and says the bottom line is that its a criminal offence.
