Electoral Commission review likely to shape Carlow and Kilkenny’s political future for years to come

The Dáil may have as many as 21 new TDs as a result of the redraw, which is one of the most significant in history

The Electoral Commission review which will be announced this week is likely to shape Carlow and Kilkenny’s political future for years to come, according to one expert.

The Dáil may have as many as 21 new TDs as a result of the redraw, which is one of the most significant in history.

Almost all constituencies are in breach of the constitution as they have more than 30 thousand citizens for every TD above the legal limit including the current Carlow Kilkenny constituency.

Geography lecturer at Maynooth University, Adrian Kavanagh says there is going to be a lot of change:

“Whatever they decide this time is probably going to set the precedent for future reports in any case because of some decisions to make particularly with current five-seat constituencies like Carlow, Kilkenny, Laois, Offaly, Wexford, Donegal, and Tipperary it’s probably the decisions they make this time around will more or less determine the shape of those constituencies for the next few reviews.”
