Evergreen remain Kilkenny’s last hope in the FAI Junior Cup, and they delivered when it mattered most, securing a dramatic 3-2 victory over Bridge United of Clare after extra time in yesterday’s clash in Clare.
Former Aston Villa striker Mikey Drennan proved to be the hero of the day, converting two crucial penalties—one in the first half and another at the end of extra time. Ify Nzewi also found the net during normal time, making it 2-1 to Evergreen before Bridge United forced extra time with a late equalizer.
While a Kilkenny team has never lifted this prestigious trophy, the Evergreen name has tasted glory before, though not from Kilkenny. Evergreen United of Cork claimed the title in 1936, followed by Evergreen of Waterford in 1953. Kilkenny’s Evergreen, however, has come heartbreakingly close, most notably losing to Sheriff in the final stages in 2017 and to Beggsboro in 1984.
This season, Evergreen’s journey has already seen them defeat Wexford Bohemians, Kilkenny’s own Bridge United, and Nenagh on penalties before overcoming Bridge United of Clare.
