The multi-million euro construction works at St Lukes hospital are now complete with the first of the new departments set to open in the next week.
The day services department will opens before the end of the month with the new Emergency Department expected to open by February of next year.
The combined estimated cost for the new departments is in the region of 20 million euro.
Carlow Kilkenny Fine Gael Deputy John Paul Phelan says it represents a huge investment in the local hospital.
