The first phase of reduced speed limits takes effect today.
As part of a campaign to improve safety on the roads all rural, local routes which up to now you could have travelled at 80 kilometers an hour on now have a limit of 60 km/h.
Each County Council will later review this with a chance some might be returned to their original limits.
While further reductions will kick in later in the year in built up areas and on secondary roads.
You’ll notice new signage on the roads impacted (see rsa.ia).
John McDarby is the Road Safety Officer with Carlow County Council;
Seamus Kavanagh is Senior Engineer with Kilkenny County Council’s Roads Department;
