Former chief of European Central Bank won't be called as witness for Banking Inquiry

Former ECB chief Jean Claude Trichet says he will not be called as a witness at the Banking Inquiry.

Mr Trichet – who strongly opposed burning Anglo bondholders during his term – says the ECB’s rules mean he does not have to answer to national parliaments.

Ministers including the Tánaiste have previously called for him to give evidence about his role in the aftermath of the banking collapse.

But Jean Claude Trichet says that’s not going to happen – he says the bank guarantee was done “without consultation”.
