A total of 5 million euro will be needed to complete Carlow’s Southern Relief Road.
Just 200 thousand euro has been granted this year for the road which will ultimately link the Wexford Road at Ballinacarrig to the Kilkenny Road at Mortarstown.
This round of funding will be used to progress the work to the design stage.
But Director of Services with Carlow County Council, Dan McInerney says it is a welcome start but admits it’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what’s needed for the project.
