Gardai escort building machinery onto site of new bridge early on Friday morning

The streets of Kilkenny were cordoned off early this morning as up to 30 Gardai arrived to escort heavy machinery on to the site where the new Central Access Scheme bridge is being built.

Roads were closed off for a time while trucks carrying the pile driver equipment arrived into the city between 4 and 5am.

Only a very small number of protestors were at Greensbridge at the time having stayed out overnight- many others have expressed their disappointment via social media this morning.

Gardai say the trucks arrived at that time of the morning to minimise disruption and extra personnell were deployed for safety reasons.

A spokesperson told KCLR news this morning it all went off peacefully – there was no obstructions and no problems with protestors.
