Gardaí warn of bogus video call scam using fake garda branding

You’re being warned about a new scam involving bogus video calls falsely claiming to be from An Garda Síochána.

The scammers uses video calling and fake contact details displaying a Garda logo and Gmail address.

Garda Niamh Doran says “they’re nefarious people with bad intentions. They’re trying to get your personal information. They’re trying to say that we’re the guards from Kilkenny or wherever and we’ve had this before there’s a warrant out you need to do this and people will fall for it.”

“You know, our logo and our name is good and people trust that it’s us, but it’s not. We won’t ever be ringing you on a video call. We don’t use our logo in any contact details, and we ring on the telephone, the good old-fashioned analogue way. “
