Heritage Week is back, with 122 events scheduled across Carlow and Kilkenny.
In Carlow, todays events include tours of historic houses and gardens, a heritage wellbeing project, and a talk at the Brownshill Dolmen.
In Kilkenny, the programme includes tours and talks at Jerpoint Abbey, Rothe House and St Mary’s Church in Gowran, as well as events exploring the county’s medieval, industrial and revolutionary history.
The theme for this year’s festival is ‘Heritage at Risk’, and will highlight traditions and habitats that are vulnerable or under threat.
Junior Heritage Minister Christopher O’Sullivan says it’s a great opportunity to explore your local area, “It’s in the 26th year and the incredible thing is it’s growing year and year.”
“What we’re finding is that every year there are more events being put on, there are more people participating and there are more community groups, in particular, that are buying into Heritage Week.”
“It’s really becoming a big deal. It’s a perfect time of year. It’s August, people are on holidays. So whatever corner of the country you are in, you know that there will be an event celebrating Heritage Week,” he added.
