Interview with Defence Minister Simon Coveney about Irish troops in the Golan Heights

The Defence Minister Simon Coveney has called on the United Nations to review the Irish Army’s missions in the Golan Heights area that Carlow and Kilkenny soldiers are serving in.

130 soldiers – most of them from James Stephens Barracks in Kilkenny are based in the area at the moment however things have changed there and 44 peacekeepers from Fiji are being held by militants for the last three days.

The Irish troops were due to be replaced by a new battalion next month, but Minister Coveney says the UN must review the mission if Ireland is to remain part of it.

He spoke to Sue Nunn yesterday.
