Preparations are well underway for this Thursday’s Goff’s Thyestes Day at Gowran Park, one of the most anticipated events in the Irish racing calendar.
Track Manager Eddie Scally shared his passion for the historic venue and the pride he feels in what makes it such a unique setting:
> “It’s a gorgeous place. Like when you said it to me last week about having a chat ahead of this, I said, look, come out, because I wanted you to see the place. I’m here for 13 years, but it’s been here for over 100 years. You’d be so proud of the different things that happen over time.
> “In my time, I’m very proud of some of the stuff that we’ve brought—the new entrance building, the new jockeys’ weigh room, new parade ring surfaces. But the board of directors here at Gowran Park…since 1914 when the track opened, they’ve always tried to improve, get better racing, get bigger attendances. It’s a credit to them.
> “I know I’m very lucky to be in a job that I absolutely adore, but it means an awful lot to me when people come here and see some of these things and say, ‘Wow,’ because it’s an absolutely spectacular setting.”
The Goff’s Thyestes Chase, famously known as “The Race That Stops the County,” always draws a massive crowd, and this year looks to be no different. Willie Mullins, the dominant force in Irish racing, has five horses entered as he bids for his record-extending 10th victory in the prestigious race.
For those looking to get race-day ready, the team from Champ.ie will host a special Thyestes preview tonight at 8 PM on YouTube, featuring expert insights and guest appearances.
