Kilkenny loses an “icon in the civic life of the city” with the death of George Sherwood

Kilkenny City is feeling a sense of loss today at the passing of a local “civic icon”.

Local business people and representatives have been paying tribute to George Sherwood who founded Sherwood’s shop on High Street.

George, who died yesterday, has been described as a visionary, a philanthropist, and a family man.

Local Green Party Councillor, Malcolm Noonan says he got to know George Sherwood through his work to preserve St Mary’s Church.

Malcolm says George was largely responsible for keeping St Mary’s in community use when other buildings like it were falling to ruin.
