Stoneyford native Colbert Fennelly is back in the spotlight tonight as part of the visual effects team for Avatar: Fire and Ash who are nominated for two oscars.
They’re up for Best Visual Effects and Best Costume Design.
He is among ten Irish nominees at the 98th Academy Awards, where Jessie Buckley is tipped for Best Actress glory for her performance in Hamnet.
If successful, it would mark another massive achievement for Fennelly, who previously worked on the Oscar-winning Way of Water. He is joined on the Avatar team by Dubliner and two-time winner Richard Baneham.
The red carpet is currently being rolled out at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles for an Oscars ceremony that could see several Irish records broken.
Ireland holds a total of 10 nominations this year across several major categories:
Best Actress: All eyes are on frontrunner Jessie Buckley. Her performance in Hamnet has made her the favorite to become the first-ever Irish woman to win the Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
Best Picture: Dublin-based Element Pictures (Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe) are in the hunt for the top prize with the sci-fi comedy Bugonia.
Best Animated Short: John Kelly and Andrew Freedman are nominated for Retirement Plan, a short film featuring the voice of Domhnall Gleeson.
Best Adapted Screenplay: Coleraine-born author Maggie O’Farrell is nominated for her work on Hamnet, alongside director Chloé Zhao.
Live coverage begins tonight, Sunday, March 15th, on RTÉ One and the RTÉ Player. Red carpet coverage kicks off at 11pm.
