Submissions close today at 5pm for people to submit their opinions and concerns about the proposed Church Street Pedestrian and Cycle Scheme in Graiguecullen.
The proposed active travel scheme is due to be delivered jointly by Carlow County Council and Laois County Council. It includes the construction of new cycle infrastructure commencing at the Barrowvale Housing Estate in County Laois and proceeding along Church Street serving Oakley Park, St. Fiacc’s National School and Governey Park, before extending to Sleaty Street and the entrance to Carlow Town Park.
As the deadline for submissions approaches, Carlow County Councillor John Cassin has encouraged local residents to have their say and voice any frustrations or concerns that they may have.
He noted the significant number of submissions that have been made already and questioned whether the council have done enough in terms of public consultation.
“If you have 379 submissions going in you have to take stock and wonder, are the cycle lanes needed in Graiguecullen?”
“It’s kind of nowhere in a sense… People are trying to see the logic of it, and there’s not a a massive amount of logic they can see in it”.
Cllr John Cassin has worked with Laois Sinn Féin Cathaoirleach Aaron Kelly to submit a combined total of 756 objections to Carlow County Council and Laois County Council.
Cllr Kelly said today that the grassroots campaign demonstrates the strength in numbers that exists within the community in Graiguecullen.
