We are all being encouraged to “Light Up and Be Seen”.

Pedestrians of all ages are being asked to take a moment to think about what they are wearing and to stay visible and safe before stepping out into the darkness.

Both local authorities have, in recent years, improved footpaths and active travel routes, making cycling lanes much safer to use.

Last year, 41 pedestrians, 14 cyclists and three e-scooter users lost their lives on Irish roads.

“The road safety authorities themselves, they provide high visibility items and fluorescent jackets, for example, in vests and so on.” he said.

“So there’s literally no excuse for us not to have fluorescent items and high visibility items when we are cycling and when we’re using the public call fairs and our roads as well, because it’s in everybody’s interest.” he added.
