The Director of a new short film produced by Kilkenny’s Cartoon Saloon has said that young women shouldn’t ask for permission before going into the world of animation.
Giovanna Ferrari made the comments after a sneak peak at her new film “Éiru” was given at the Dingle Animation Festival yesterday.
“Éiru”, which tells the story of an iron-age girl who journeys deep into the earth to save her village’s water supply, was also written by Ferrari.
She told KCLR News that animation is a relatively more progressive field, when it comes to opportunities for women.
“The industry of animation is maybe one of the industries where things are better, for women” she said, “that doesn’t mean that it’s easy, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t the challenges there for women too.”
“I’d say to young women who want to pursue a career in animation to just go for it and be strong and be happy, and especially, rely on other people around them, and other women too, and also on themselves.”
She concluded by advising women interested in a career in animation to “stand up and do it, and don’t wait for permission.”
