Loreto Kilkenny win European debating competition

Loreto  in Kilkenny has won this year’s EU Model Council debating competition.

Three students at the College defeated 29 other schools across the Country when they argued in favour of fracking or fracturing coal and rocks seams to extract gas.

The Kilkenny teenagers will now represent Ireland in a pan-EU debate at the European Parliament in September.

Student Sarah Lanigan says they convinced the judges that a fracking tax will ultimately benefit the environment.
