Kilkenny manager Derek Lyng was pleased with his side’s effort and application following their 20 points to 16 victory over Offaly at UPMC Nowlan Park, while also acknowledging areas that need improvement.
Speaking to the KCLR Hurling Podcast after the game, Lyng pointed to the number of new faces involved and the challenge Offaly brought to the contest.
“There was some positives, there was a number of players playing their first game for Kilkenny today in the league. Really happy with them,” Lyng said. “I thought our effort and application from the players was excellent.”
The Kilkenny boss described the game as a demanding test, one he expected heading into the fixture.
“It was a tough game, I knew it would be. It was a grind,” he said, while also crediting Offaly for their defensive work.
However, Lyng was clear that Kilkenny will need to sharpen up in front of goal as the league campaign continues.
“I’m disappointed with our efficiency, we left a lot of chances behind, that’s a credit to Offaly also. It is something to improve on, less than 50% efficiency, you really have to take your chances when you are creating them.”
Despite those concerns, Lyng felt the overall outcome was a positive one for his side.
“Overall though, I’m pleased and happy with the win,” he added.
