Ireland South MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú has backed a Fianna Fáil colleague’s call for the development of motorway linking the midlands to Rosslare Europort, which would incorporate much of the current N80’s footprint.
The suggestion was made at the July meeting of Carlow’s local authority by Councillor Andrea Dalton, who told colleagues that the N80 is now responsible for four and a half million annual vehicle movements.
MEP Ní Mhurchú said that the idea if realised would bring multiple benefits telling KCLR News’ Dermot Keyes; “This is not just a south east project, it would really benefit businesses and communities across much of Ireland, better connectivity would reduce freight costs and improve journey times and strengthen supply chains but would also assist with road safety issues, it would remove heavy traffic from towns and villages assisting the fight with road deaths and improving road safety, and also the environment”.
