Missiles thrown at Gardai and fires lit after horses seized in Wetlands area

Missiles were thrown at Gardai in the Wetlands area of Kilkenny city late last night.

Earlier yesterday the Gardai had assisted Kilkenny county council in the seizure of 8 horses in the area and there were a number of public order incidents during efforts to stop them from taking the animals.

Last night at around 11.30 Gardai were called again to the area to a report of fires being lit.

On their arrival they discovered the public roadway was blocked by fires and missiles were thrown causing some damage to a patrol car.

Back up was requested from Castlecomer, Thomastown and the Regional Response unit and order was restored allowing the fire service to deal with the blazes.

No arrests were made.

Superintendent Paraic Dunne of Kilkenny Gardai says their investigation is ongoing and hopes the events of yesterday wont affect the good working relationship they have with residents in that area
