The scammers are very resourceful, they’re constantly evolving, they’re constantly thinking of new scams and we find ourselves sometimes just trying to respond to that.
Those are the words of Sgt Eddie Brennan Crime Prevention Officer with Kilkenny Gardaí.
The latest scam involves an allegation that you’re involved in a traffic incident and they’re looking for you to go inspect their vehicle in car parks while their accomplice will rummage through your car and try to steal cash or cards that can be used to scam money off you.
Sgt Brennan has this advice for motorists: “First and foremost, don’t engage in it.”
“Security of your personal belongings in your car is probably another course of action that we would be encouraging but it’s probably particularly geared towards people that are on their own and again vulnerable people, maybe elderly people on their own, maybe in doing a bit of shopping and they’re being identified this way and targeted specifically for that. So we would just say it to be extra vigilant on it.”
