Schools in Kilkenny and Carlow are getting 23 new special needs assistant posts between them.
They will be allocated to the local schools from September – with 12 for Kilkenny and 11 for Carlow
It’s part of an increase of 610 positions nation-wide and follows a significant increase in assessed need.
Its after the Minister requested a review to ensure the Special Needs Assistant scheme is sustainable in meeting its objectives.
More than half of the extra posts will be provided to support students in mainstream classes while 45% of posts will serve students in special classes
