Dicksboro and Kilkenny defender Padraic Moylan played a captain’s role as he led DCU to a hard-fought victory over reigning champions Mary Immaculate College in the quarter-finals of the Electric Ireland Fitzgibbon Cup.
The game, held at the DCU Sportsgrounds, saw the hosts emerge victorious with a final score of 1-20 to 1-18. The encounter featured a strong local contingent, with several players from the county playing pivotal roles. Among them was St Mullins’ Conor Kehoe. Mary Immaculate College, boasting a talented squad, had a Kilkenny influence, with Jamie Ryan of O’Loughlin Gaels and Liam Hogan of Mooncoin among their ranks. Despite their efforts, they fell just short against a determined DCU side.
Moylan, speaking on the post-match broadcast, highlighted the belief within the DCU dressing room as key factors in their triumph.
“We had the belief within ourselves and in that dressing room. I told the boys outside that dressing room no one thought we were going to win here today. It’s the greatest position to be in as underdogs,” Moylan said. “We talked about the hooks, blocks, and tackles, and that’s what got us over the line today. We knew we just had to outfight them and win the breaks, and that’s what we did.”
