Carlow County Council plans to deliver 101 new social and affordable homes in 2026 to boost housing supply.

According to their Housing Focus Information Campaign, construction is already underway on 50 properties, with more projects set to begin in the coming months.

The local authority is also reusing vacant properties and working with housing bodies to provide safe and secure homes.

Officials say the focus remains on meeting local housing needs.

Speaking on housing progress Director of Services Fiona O’Neill said; “We are making real progress on housing in Carlow. Over the lifetime of the Housing for All plan, we have built 557 homes, acquired 151 and leased 56 properties for social housing. These homes now provide secure accommodation for individuals and families. Our continued focus is on developing and acquiring quality and sustainable homes and building communities that meet the needs of people in the county of Carlow.”

The local authority continues to work closely with Approved Housing Bodies (AHBs) and the private sector to accelerate delivery, providing 377 safe and secure homes through these partnerships. It is also advancing the reuse of vacant and derelict properties, with 48 homes brought back into use during the Housing for All Plan 2021–2025 and additional properties earmarked for reuse in 2026.

“We understand significant housing pressures are facing people in our county,” Chief Executive Coilín O’Reilly added. Carlow County Council is focused on delivering homes and providing the supports people need. Tackling housing supply requires careful planning and collaboration and we are committed to building upon what is being achieved and significantly increasing the housing supply in county Carlow.

We are committed to meeting housing need through sustained delivery and collaboration, while creating engaged, vibrant communities where people can thrive and feel connected.”

This week, Carlow County Council will share further updates on its housing projects and supports through its website and social media channels. Follow the conversation using #HousingFocus.
