The return of indoor dining in Carlow and Kilkenny’s bars and restaurants is to be delayed by at least another two weeks.
It’s after stark figures about the potential of the Delta variant of Covid-19 were outlined at a late night meeting of Ministers last night.
A vaccine bonus was discussed, which could see only fully vaccinated people allowed to dine indoors.
The Cabinet will meet to finalise details this morning while the Taoiseach Micheál Martin will be making an official announcement this afternoon.
Trinity College geneticist Prof Aoife McLysaght has been telling KCLR that we shouldn’t be surprised that delays to re-opening are being considered when we see what’s happening in the UK.
She says “the Delta variant arrived there sooner and they’ve had to delay some of their re-opening plans even though they are further advanced in their vaccination rollout than we are and even though their health system is better resourced than ours is”.
