A Carlow-based Rohingyan man says he fears his mother may have been killed or seriously injured by a Burmese landmine.
Haikel was one of the Rohingyan community who were resettled in Carlow after he was forced to flee Myanmar – which is also called Burma – back in 2006.
However, tensions have been growing there since an army crackdown last month which has led to the deaths of at least 400 people and the mass exodus of more than 100,000 of the Rohingya minority.
Speaking on The Way It Is last night, Haikel says he now has no idea if his mother is alive or dead.
He says already one family member, an elderly uncle, has been killed in the last fortnight.
And he says there’s not a member of their community in Carlow who hasn’t had a family member affected in some way.
