A Memorandum of Understanding setting out a strategic framework for collaboration across pharmacy education, research and clinical practice has been formally signed by the South East Technological University (SETU) and University Hospital Waterford (UHW).

It sets out a structured approach to discussions and future initiatives between the two organisations, with a focus on enhancing opportunities for students, staff, and healthcare professionals, while ultimately improving patient outcomes.

President of SETU, Professor Veronica Campbell, said; “This MoU between SETU and UHW is a special and strategic collaboration that will strengthen and enhance pharmacy education and wider healthcare education in our region, with great potential for broader societal impact.”

“SETU has developed a strong collaborative relationship with UHW over many years, and this has proven highly beneficial to healthcare education in the south east. I would like to thank Ben O’Sullivan, Cliona Hayden, and the team at UHW for their continued partnership, and I look forward to further developing our collaboration in the years ahead.”

Dr Claire Lennon, Head of Department of Pharmacy at SETU, notes;“This MoU represents an important step in strengthening the link between academic education and clinical pharmacy practice. By working closely with the Pharmacy Department at University Hospital Waterford, we can ensure our pharmacy graduates are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and experience required to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care, while also fostering a strong culture of research and innovation.”

Cliona Hayden, Pharmacist Executive Manager from UHW, commented, “This MoU reflects our shared commitment to developing the next generation of pharmacists through high‑quality education, meaningful clinical experience, and collaborative research. We look forward to working closely with SETU to support students, staff, and innovation in pharmacy practice, with patient outcomes at the centre of everything we do.”

Ben O’Sullivan, CEO of UHW and Kilcreene Regional Orthopaedic Hospital, agreed that “Pharmacists are central to delivering safe, high‑quality, and sustainable healthcare. This partnership with SETU aligns strongly with UHW’s mission to provide patient‑centred care to our region, while ensuring effective stewardship of healthcare resources. Investing in strong clinical–academic collaboration supports better outcomes for patients and long‑term value for the health system.”

Outlined in the agreement are several key areas for potential collaboration, including interprofessional education (IPE), research opportunities; potential for programme development, as well as placements for students of SETU’s Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) programme.

Through shared expertise and resources, SETU and UHW aim to strengthen clinical pharmacy practice, delivering the most relevant and future-focused education and training for pharmacy students.

As part of the agreement, UHW will support the continued development of education and research at SETU, including exploring opportunities for postgraduate training up to PhD level for pharmacists.

This partnership reflects a shared commitment by SETU and UHW to advancing healthcare education, supporting professional development, and improving patient care across the region.
