We don’t need a blanket ban on sunbeds – we just need to enforce the existing rules.
That’s the call from the country’s Sunbed Association which represents the professional tanning industry across Ireland.
It’s accusing the government of a lack of transparency over plans to ban commercial sunbeds – they say a number of key reports weren’t made public.
Locally based Minister of State Jennifer Murnane O’Connor last month officially launched two reports, both of which can be viewed on Government’s website here and here.
Association Vice Chair, Joe McGlinchey, believes banning tanning would drive the practice underground – and shut down small businesses right across the country – he says; “What we’re saying is enforce current compliance, let’s keep everybody in their jobs, this is local family-run businesses that employ mothers, daughters, mainly women-owned as well, they’re employing local people like electricians, joiners; it has a knock-on effect on everyone”.
