A special public event is taking place later this month for anyone who has been bereaved by suicide or affected by it in their community.
The Kilkenny Bereavement Society will host “Suicide Bereavement – Heartbreak to Hope” at the Newpark Hotel at 7pm on Thursday, April 30th.
Organisers say the evening will also support those helping others through suicide bereavement, offering guidance, understanding, and hope.
Bronagh Treacy is with the Kilkenny Bereavement Society.
She says those supporting others affected by a bereavement by suicide will also benefit from the evening
“The topics that they have given us is the impact of suicide on the bereaved, the needs of those who are bereaved by suicide, which can change over time from the initial stages.” said Bronagh.
“They’re going to look at society’s attitudes and fears around suicide. We do have a cultural legacy here of a negative attitude towards people who have, for one reason or another, felt that that was the only option that was available to them to take their own lives.”
“While we have moved forward hugely, I think there is still a bit of a shadow from that cultural legacy and sometimes families can still feel that shame or that fear of judgement.” she added.
