The Golden Girl: Oscar Nomination for Saoirse Ronan in ‘Brooklyn’

The 88th annual Academy Awards won’t be doled out until 28 February, but today we finally know who’s in the running for Hollywood’s top honours.

Saoirse Ronan was announced this past lunchtime as having secured a nomination for Best Actress for her role in Colm Toibín’s Brooklyn, released to Irish cinemas late last year.
She’ll go head to head with Cate Blanchett, Brie Larson (who won the Golden Globe), Jennifer Lawrence and Charlotte Rampling for Actress in a Leading Role.

Much like the Golden Glones, the Oscars will have a great Irish flavour to them this year with nominations for Brooklyn, Room, Saoirse Ronan, Michael Fassbender, Lenny Abrahamson and Emma Donoghue.
Leonardo DiCaprio’s latest, The Revenant, topped the award nods with a total of 12 nominations. Lenny Abrahamson’s Room, Spotlight and Max Max: Fury Road bring up the rear with a handful of nominations each.
