118 people died in this way between 2017 and 2021 with 93 others in 2022 and 78 in 2023.
However such statistics for the last two years are ‘provisional’ and will change as inquests and findings for fatalities are concluded.
Carlow’s worst year was 2020 with four people per 100,000 loosing their lives in waters, that’s at an average rate of 3.2 in the last two years.
While Kilkenny’s mean rate of almost two people per 100,000 for the five years to 2021 has halved for 2022 and 2023.
