Today marks the 5th anniversary of the Covid-19 pandemic. On March 12th, 2020, then Taoiseach Leo Varadkar addressed the nation, announcing significant measures to combat the spread of the virus. Schools, colleges, and childcare facilities were closed, and teaching shifted online.
The government also advised cancelling indoor gatherings of more than 100 people and outdoor gatherings exceeding 500. These early steps marked the beginning of Ireland’s response to the global health crisis.
As the pandemic rapidly unfolded, many employees found themselves sent home to work remotely, with little preparation. KCLR News’ Sinead Burke, “We were sent home with equipment, work-from-home was about to start, and we had no idea how it would go.”
“Apps were downloaded, microphones and headphones set up, and a desk was placed in the corner of the sitting room. We were winging it for a long time.”
“Despite the uncertainty, there was a sense of understanding among the public as everyone adjusted to the new normal.”
“Offices and studios were eerily quiet, with only essential personnel remaining on-site to provide services.”
