“You can be convicted for no insurance on an e-scooter. FACT.”
That’s the message Kilkenny Gardaí shared on their Facebook page this afternoon after two people were convicted for having no insurance for their respective machines.
Last August, local Gardai ran an operation targeting e-scooters in breach of the Road Traffic Act with four E Scooters found to be in breach of the law.
All four machines were capable of achieving speeds in excess of the permitted 20 kilometres per hour (kph) and also featured motors with power exceeding 400 watts. In fact, one of the four was tested and was capable of reaching 70kph.
When asked if e-scooters can be driven legally without insurance, the Kilkenny Garda Facebook page stated: “Yes, under 20kph, 400w motor or less and under 25kg.”
The two remaining cases will be heard by a judge at a future date.
