Two local products could be granted geographical protection by EU

Two local products could be given geographical protection by the EU.

Kilkenny Crystal and Borris Lace are among the products being considered by the European Commission for geographical protection.

This status has been given to a number of Irish agriculturally-based commodities before, most recently to the Waterford Blaa which can now only be produced in 2 Waterford bakeries as well as one bakery in South
Kilkenny.

Kilkenny Crystal is based in Tinnamona in Callan and is Ireland’s oldest family-owned crystal studio workshop having been founded back in 1969.

Borris Lace is older still having been founded in the Carlow town in the mid-19th century.

The Commission has identified more that 800 products EU-wide that are likely to benefit from geographical protection.
